Back in the Time to Reconstruction Period
The Fifth grade students traveled back in time to the Reconstruction period in their recent visit to Roper Mountain Science Center. Students visited cabins of slaves and sat in actual wooden desks in the Rector School, which was constructed in 1898 by farmers who wanted to send their students to school. There was no time for play, they got busy using their chalkboards to answer questions about slave rights and the amendments to the Constitution! After visiting the schoolhouse, students ventured into the actual home of a slave owner and his family. They experienced the cotton seed picking process and sung songs about Bulweival. Only if they picked all of their seeds out of their cotton, did they earn the right to take their cotton home. Finally, they got their hands dirty digging the garden to prepare the crops and learned about the hardships of owing their masters more money than they earned.
